I’m struck with the theme of travel in these narratives. The eagle stirs her nest and catches the eaglets on her wings. Jacob returns to the Promised Land, and Laban chases after. The children of Israel move from the camp to the foot of the mountain. The Shunammite woman travels to Mt Carmel to find Elisha. In yesterday’s post, God carried His people. Today, the people venture forth to step into God’s destiny,
This is the second of the series. Shunem means two resting places. Two points make a line. The travel seems to have been in a line, connecting two places (rather than a triangle or a circle, for example).
1. SECOND EAGLE’S WINGS
Deuteronomy 32:11 (ESV) God caring for Israel
Like an eagle that stirs up its nest,
that flutters over its young,
spreading out its wings, catching them,
bearing them on its pinions
2. SECOND STONE OF TESTIMONY
Genesis 31:44-55 Covenant between Jacob and Laban
Anointing: Animal sacrifice, meal
Declaration: “This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass by this heap to you for harm, and you will not pass by this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.”
3. MOSES’ SECOND ASCENT (Ex 19:8-13) AND DESCENT (Ex 19:14-19) OF MT. SINAI
The Israelites are instructed to sanctify themselves, wash clothes, abstain from sex, and respect the boundaries God had set.
Exodus 19:16-17 NIV
On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
4. SECOND RESURRECTION
The Shunammite’s son (2 Kings 4)
On the sudden death of this woman’s son she hastened to Carmel, 20 miles distant across the plain, to catch Elisha by the feet, and to bring him with her to Shunem.
Carmel means ‘garden.’ It is known for victory in spiritual warfare. In the “prophet’s chamber” in Shunem (two resting places), the dead child lay; and Elisha entering it, shut the door and prayed earnestly. Elisha lay upon the child two times, and the boy was restored to life.
5. SECOND OX
Numbers 24:8 (AMP)
“God brought Israel out of Egypt;
Israel has strength like the wild ox;
He will devour [Gentile] nations, his adversaries (enemies),
And will crush their bones in pieces,
And shatter them with his arrows.
6. SECOND LION
Numbers 23:24 (ESV) Balaam’s second oracle about Jacob and Israel
Behold, a people! As a lioness it rises up
and as a lion it lifts itself;
it does not lie down until it has devoured the prey
and drunk the blood of the slain.
