Farewell Address of 1796, delivered in Congress Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:
Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.
Proverbs 14:34 ESV
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.
Our Father in heaven,
Our nation has sinned in many ways. We have fallen short of Your glory. Lord, have mercy.
We yearn for Your righteousness. We stand in agreement with Your righteousness. In the synergy of the ages, we stand in agreement with President Washington’s admonitions to walk Your paths of righteousness.
We loose Your holy angels over the voters of Philadelphia. Stir them to stop at the crossroads and look around, to ask for the old, godly way, and to walk in it. Amen.
