Genesis 1:28 (ESV)
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
We thank You, Father, that work is a fundamental dimension of man’s existence on earth.
We thank You, Father, that work gives us the means to develop more fully, the means to shape ourselves and shape the world.
We thank You, Father, that work makes us more fully human, by acquiring technical skills and moral virtues–prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.
We thank You, Father, that work meets our social needs to belong, contribute, co-create, and share.
We lift up the Mississippi Delta, with its high unemployment rate, and we cry out for mercy. Let there be human flourishing! Let there be the human happiness and growth that comes from work, whether it is paid labor, volunteer activities, working in the home, gardening, raising livestock, fishing, and hunting.
Yes, we want the jobs and the income, but more important is the intrinsic dignity that comes from subduing and transforming the world in which we live.
Let there be work in the Mississippi Delta! Amen and amen.
