In Mark 8:40-9:6, there is a sequence of three stories involving the number twelve. The symbolic meaning of twelve has to do with rule and God’s government.
By healing the woman with the issue of blood for twelve years, Jesus restores her to her community.
Redeeming lost life and lost bloodline
Jesus resurrects Jairus’ 12-year-old daughter.
Reclaiming the King’s dominion
Jesus commissions the twelve disciples to go to the villages, tell everyone about the kingdom of God, and heal the sick.
The sequence of these three stories reminds me of the sequence of the three ‘lost’ parables in Luke 15–the prodigal son representing lost relationship; the lost sheep representing lost life, the lost coin representing lost inheritance.
Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Sixty million abortions since Roe v. Wade, our nation is much like the woman with the issue of blood. There is no stemming the flow. There are sixty million unborn babies, sixty million lost lives, sixty million lost bloodlines. How many people have lost their relationship to You?
We invite You into the United States of America Senate confirmation hearings of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. We invite You to restore relationships, redeem our lost bloodlines, and reclaim Your dominion in our land. Amen.
Previous post on another sequence of three stories, each involving a man from Bethlehem.
