As a district attorney, Anselm J McLaurin participated in the convention for the writing of the Mississippi Constitution in 1890. He was the first Governor of Mississippi to be elected under the Mississippi Constitution of 1890, which disenfranchised most blacks by raising barriers to voter registration. These changes essentially ended the competitiveness of the Republican Party in the state, as well as severely weakening the Populist Party. The last Confederate veteran elected as governor, he served from 1896 to 1900.
McLaurin also served as US Senator. He was a cousin of my ancestors.
Show us your unfailing love, O Lord,
and grant us your salvation.
I listen carefully to what God the Lord is saying,
for he speaks peace to his faithful people.
But let them not return to their foolish ways.
Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
so our land will be filled with his glory.
Our Father in heaven,
We confess our sins of covenant-breaking–-broken promises, broken commitments, broken relationships. Lord, have mercy.
We confess the sins of our forefathers in Mississippi in breaking covenant with the United States of America. Christ, have mercy.
We plead the Blood of the Lamb to cover the broken covenant between the state of Mississippi and the United States of America.
We confess our sins of racism and violence. We have shamefully treated our Afro-American brother and sisters. By institutionalizing these unjust laws, we have compelled and propagated racism. We are a stiff-necked people. Forgive us for our history of Jim Crow laws in Mississippi. Forgive our racism and hatred. Forgive our pride in naming a neighborhood and a school for a politician who supported institutionalized racism. Lord, have mercy.
We humbly seek Your pardon. If there are any curses attached to the name of McLaurin because of broken covenant and Jim Crow legislation, we claim the Blood of the Lamb over the name. If there are any curses attached to the offices of Governor of Mississippi and US Senator of Mississippi as a consequence of Anselm McLaurin’s actions, we cut those curses with the Sword of the Spirit.
Extend Your grace to the state of Mississippi. Extend Your grace to McLaurin Attendance Center in Florence and McLaurin Heights neighborhood in Pearl. We declare, Your kingdom come, Your will be done in these places, as it is in heaven.
We bless our Afro-American brothers and sisters in Mississippi.
We bless the descendants of Anselm McLaurin. Amen.
